What possible use is Beetroot??
So some of you know that I have an Allotment which I love spending time at, and there are some things that it is obligatory to grow when you have an allotment even if you don't like them. Courgettes are one, and despite all efforts you always get a glut of them. Beetroot is another. I have never seen the point of Beetroot, its not that nice to eat roasted or pickled and despite the colour you can't dye with it. And yet every year I say ' I am not sowing beetroot seeds this year' and then find myself doing it a couple of weeks later.
So I picked 2 big Beetroot yesterday and decided to find a purpose for them, and what better than Chocolate cake.So this morning I boiled a Beetroot and then liquidized it.
I like to bake but only if it a chuck it all in the bowl, mix and bake type of cake. This was something a bit more complicated and involved seperating eggs and folding and melting all in a specific order. So my kitchen started off clean and tidy and then 3 large mixing bowls a jug and 2 small bowls later..........
..........the mixture was ready to go in the oven. A lovely shade of burgandy...............
..................45 mins later .......................
....................what appears to be a good cake has come out of the oven.
Now I to taste..................hhhmmmmm.....................nomnom................... yes its kinda good I think. I tried a small piece whilst still warm and it a little wet but I have just finished my dinner so will try again now its cooled.
Of course the other thing that must be grow at an allotment is Pumpkin, which I do happen to like as a spicy soup.
This blog seems to be going in every direction except the fabric/sewing kind so I will make sure the next one is Sewing related. Hope you all have a Fabby weekend and I am raising my glass of Rose to you all xx
The link for this recipe is this by the way http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/beetroot_chocolate_cake_82388 by good old Nigel Slater.

ReplyDeleteThanks Vicky. I actually managed to kill the courgette plants this year. But I'm sure ,due to it being obligatory, I will do some next year and will let you know when I have some flowers. Hope you are all wellxx
